The Claw

The Claw

Twenty years ago, I attended a master class held by the conservator Benner Larsen. We were taught how to build models with specially dyed epoxy - working inside an open mould. One of the challenges was to make a polar bear claw. The beauty of the deadly dagger deeply attracted me. After having worked with subsurface scattering for a decade, I found that it was time to make The Claw.

I was shaping it in styrofoam and covering it with our sculpting compound “Rasmonite” - an acrylic gypsum, which has been tweaked and refined by our alchemist Rasmus Frederiksen.

When the shape was realised, I built the keratin from layers of specially dyed epoxy. Then, finally, it was polished and waxed, ready for a gigantic prey.
